Many people moving to Portugal need insurance before their paperwork is fully complete. You may be applying for a visa, waiting for a residency appointment, buying property from abroad or importing a car. The good news is that some policies can often be prepared early, but the documents required depend on the product and insurer.

Health insurance is usually the easiest starting point

Private health insurance for relocation or visa purposes can often be quoted using passport details, date of birth, address information and medical declarations. A NIF may not always be required at the quotation stage, although some insurers can request it before issue or payment. For AIMA or consular proof, the policy certificate needs to show the insured person, dates and Portugal coverage clearly.

Home, mortgage and car insurance can need more local information

What you can do before residency is approved

You can collect medical history, property documents, vehicle details, previous insurance certificates and proof of no-claims history from your current country. British, American, French and German clients should also check whether existing policies remain valid once Portugal becomes the main residence, because many home-country policies are not designed for permanent relocation.

When a NIF becomes important

A Portuguese NIF is often needed for contracts, payments, property purchase, mortgage arrangements and many local services. Even when it is not needed for a preliminary quote, having it ready usually makes policy issue smoother. If you are still waiting for residency, the broker can help distinguish what is possible now from what must wait for final documentation.

Adler & Rochefort works with expats before and after arrival, helping arrange the correct sequence so insurance does not become the bottleneck in a move to Portugal.
