Our difference

Not just a policy.
An intermediary who works for you.

As an independent, ASF-registered insurance intermediary we work for you, not the insurer. We compare the whole market, explain everything in plain English and stay by your side through every claim.

01
Everything in English
An English-speaking team explains your options, the paperwork and the small print clearly — nothing lost in translation.
02
Independent — we compare the market
We are not tied to a single insurer. We put your needs first and find the right cover at the right price.
03
Local Algarve knowledge
On the ground in Lagos and across the Algarve, we understand local risks, providers and the requirements expats face.
04
We handle your claim in English
When something goes wrong, we manage the process end to end and make sure you receive what you are entitled to.
The difference between insurance that looks fine and insurance that works is usually in the details you checked before the claim.

Who is by your side

Hugo Gonçalves — Founder of Adler & Rochefort

Hugo Gonçalves

Founder & Risk Management Specialist

Hugo Gonçalves is the driving force behind Adler & Rochefort, combining extensive international experience with a unique specialisation in insurance consultancy for expats and residents in Portugal. His vision is clear: to give private clients and their families risk management that transcends the traditional policy.

With a degree in Business Management from the University of Hertfordshire and ongoing training at the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), Hugo works from a technical grounding rather than a sales one. Nearly twenty years at the forefront of global tourism technology at companies such as Hotelbeds (HBX Group) gave him a working knowledge of how international clients hold assets across several countries, and of what that does to a policy written in one of them.

Since founding Adler & Rochefort, Hugo has been redefining the role of the insurance intermediary in Portugal. He has focused on cultivating strong partnerships with leading insurers such as Allianz, April, Hiscox and Zurich, and on giving English-speaking clients clear, independent advice. The result is access to the markets that will underwrite a risk individually, from health and home insurance to policies for private clients with assets the retail market will not take.

His working method is to read the policy before recommending it, and to say plainly where the cover stops. Each client's needs are analysed in detail, cover is built around what they actually own and where it is kept, and everything is done under ASF supervision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions? We have answers.

An insurance intermediary is a professional authorised by the ASF who independently analyses the market to find the best protection solutions for your case. Unlike an agent tied to a single insurer, an independent intermediary works for you — comparing products, negotiating terms and supporting you in claims management, always defending your interests.
Yes. The analysis is completely free and without obligation. We study your current policies, identify coverage gaps and present a report with concrete recommendations. The decision to proceed is always yours.
Most expats start with health, home and car insurance, then add mortgage life, personal accident, boat, art, classic car, high-value home or personal cyber cover depending on their assets and residency plans.
After the initial analysis we present a concrete plan with compared alternatives. For most expat policies — health, home and car — we can come back with a free quote within 24 to 48 hours.
We manage the entire claims process from start to finish. From filing with the insurer to negotiating the settlement, we stand by your side to ensure you receive what you are entitled to, quickly and without unnecessary bureaucracy.
Yes. We are an insurance intermediary registered and authorised by the Portuguese Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority (ASF), complying with all regulatory requirements of the sector in Portugal.
Often yes, but it depends on the insurer and product. Health insurance for a visa or relocation can usually be started with passport details, while car, mortgage or home insurance may require a NIF, Portuguese address, bank details or property documentation before the policy can be issued.
Portuguese private health insurers normally assess declared medical history before accepting cover. A condition may be excluded, accepted after a waiting period, accepted with limits or priced differently. The safest approach is to disclose it clearly and compare insurers before applying.
Legal residents can register with the public health service (SNS), but long waiting times, limited English and gaps in areas such as dental and optical lead most expats to add private cover. Many use the SNS for serious or emergency care and private insurance for faster, English-speaking access to consultations, exams and private hospitals.
