Quick answer: what should you budget?
Private health insurance in Portugal is usually cheaper than equivalent international cover, but the price changes sharply with age, benefits, hospital network and underwriting. A healthy adult in their 30s may see entry-level private plans from roughly the low tens of euros per month, while comprehensive plans for people in their 60s can be several times higher.
For 2026 planning, the useful question is not only the monthly premium. You should compare annual limits, hospitalisation cover, outpatient co-payments, dental, maternity, cancer treatment, international assistance and whether the insurer accepts your medical history.
Typical 2026 price bands by age
- Children and teenagers: often the lowest premium, especially when added to a family policy.
- Adults aged 25 to 44: usually the strongest balance between premium and access to private hospitals.
- Adults aged 45 to 59: premiums rise and underwriting questions become more important.
- Age 60 to 69: acceptance, exclusions and annual limits matter more than headline price.
- Age 70+: many standard plans restrict new entry, so broker-led placement becomes essential.
Why two quotes can look very different
One policy may look cheaper because it uses higher co-payments, lower annual ceilings, a smaller network or no meaningful hospitalisation limit. Another may cost more but remove the risk of a large bill when you need surgery or specialist treatment.
If you need proof for a visa, renewal or appointment with AIMA, make sure the certificate clearly identifies the insured person, policy dates, Portugal coverage and medical benefits. A low-cost travel policy is not always accepted as substitute proof.
How to avoid overpaying
- Compare at least three insurers using the same birth dates and desired benefits.
- Ask whether pre-existing conditions are excluded, covered with a surcharge or subject to waiting periods.
- Do not buy international cover if a Portuguese private plan already solves your practical need.
- Review the policy every year before renewal, especially after age-band increases.
