Families move to Portugal for very different reasons — a job relocation, retirement, homeschooling flexibility, simply wanting a different pace of life — and what insurance actually applies depends on the family's own circumstances, not a generic checklist. This is not a bundle: we do not assume every family needs health, home, car and life cover arranged all at once.

Health insurance

Usually the first thing a family sorts out, and often the one with the most questions attached — whether children go on the same policy as the adults or a separate one, how a visa or residence application's proof-of-cover requirement is met, and how any pre-existing conditions across several family members are declared. See health insurance in Portugal.

Home insurance

Whether you are buying or renting, the home needs cover matched to how a family actually uses it — and family liability is worth checking specifically: cover for accidental damage or injury caused by a household member, including children, to someone outside the household. See home insurance in Portugal.

Car insurance

A family with more than one driver, or a driver bringing a foreign licence and no-claims history, has questions a single-driver policy does not answer on its own — whether every driver needs to be named, and how that foreign history is actually treated by a Portuguese insurer. See car insurance in Portugal.

Life and family protection

The one families most often postpone rather than decide against — usually because nobody has sat down to work out what sum insured makes sense, or whether an existing policy from another country still applies once the family has actually moved. If there are dependants, or a mortgage on a Portuguese property, this is worth deciding rather than leaving open. See mortgage life insurance for foreign buyers in Portugal.

Tell us about your family's situation — who needs to be covered, and for what — and we will tell you honestly which of these actually apply.

The practical side of the move

The NIF, a bank account, a Portuguese address for correspondence and other settle-in practicalities are handled on our relocation services page — this article is deliberately about insurance only, not immigration, tax or estate planning, where the right specialist is not us.
