Moving to Portugal with a medical history does not mean private health insurance is impossible. It does mean the application needs to be handled carefully, because Portuguese and international insurers usually assess existing diagnoses, medication, previous surgery and recent symptoms before confirming what they will cover.

How to approach the move

Do not wait until the week before a visa, AIMA appointment or renewal deadline. Start the health cover review early, disclose the condition clearly and compare insurers on underwriting position, not only on price. The cheapest premium is not useful if the condition you are worried about is excluded in a way you did not understand.
