A clean US driving record feels like it should count for something when insuring a car in Portugal. Whether it actually does, and how much, is a different question — and the honest answer is that it depends on what a Portuguese insurer will accept as evidence, not on how good the record itself is.
What Portuguese insurers price on
Portuguese motor insurers typically look at the driver's age, how long the licence has been held, the vehicle, how and where it will be used, and claims history. Claims history within Portugal, and often within the EU/EEA more broadly, tends to move relatively cleanly between insurers through established no-claims-history documentation. A US record sits outside that system, and there is no single, universal mechanism that converts "12 years, no at-fault claims, in California" into a Portuguese no-claims tier automatically.
What can still help
- Proof of how long you have held a licence. Licence tenure is generally straightforward to document (the licence itself, or a state record) and is one of the factors Portuguese insurers do weigh.
- A claims-history letter from your US carrier, if you can get one. Not every US insurer issues a document in a form a Portuguese insurer recognises, and even where one is provided, how much weight it carries — a full no-claims equivalent, a partial allowance, or none — varies by insurer and is not something to assume in advance.
What this means in practice
Gather what you can before requesting quotes: the licence itself (and how long it has been held), and a claims-history letter from your US carrier if one is obtainable, even if you are not certain it will be used. Go in expecting that a Portuguese insurer's starting point is closer to "new driver in this market" than "driver with a proven US record" — and treat any acceptance of the US history as a genuine plus, not the default.
