Allianz has one of the broadest home insurance ranges in Portugal, and for owners who want to hold several policies with one insurer it is usually the first place we look. The proposition is less about a single outstanding cover and more about breadth: a lot of optional modules, a genuinely useful assistance service, and a structure that lets you build the policy up rather than accept a fixed package.

We are an independent, ASF-registered mediator. We are not tied to this insurer, we are not paid to recommend it, and on plenty of properties we place the cover elsewhere. What follows is how the proposition actually behaves for English-speaking owners in Portugal, including the parts that are inconvenient.

What Allianz offers on a Portuguese home

The base is the same multi-risk habitação architecture every Portuguese insurer uses — building, contents, water damage, storm, theft, glass, electrical damage, liability, assistance. Where Allianz differs is in how much sits above that base as electable cover, and in how far the assistance goes.

The practical consequence is that an Allianz schedule for a well-specified villa is longer than most, and a good deal of the value sits in lines the owner never reads. It is worth reading them.

Where Allianz is strong

Concentrating home, health and motor. This is the clearest advantage and the most underrated. Holding home, private health and car cover with one insurer usually produces a multi-policy discount, but the real benefit is administrative: one renewal calendar, one claims number, one broker conversation, and no argument between two insurers about which policy responds when a claim straddles both. For expat households running three or four policies, it removes a genuine annoyance.

The assistance is not a token cover. Most Portuguese policies include 24-hour assistance and most owners never use it. On Allianz’s higher tiers it is broad enough to be worth using — and for a second-home owner who is 2,000 kilometres away when the boiler fails, a service that will dispatch a tradesperson and let them in via a key-holder is worth more than a marginally lower premium.

Optional covers that are actually available. Several Portuguese insurers list accidental damage or garden cover in the general conditions and then decline to write them on a given property. Allianz’s optional modules are, in our experience, reliably obtainable, which makes it easier to build a policy that fits an unusual property without leaving the retail market.

Breadth of appetite. Allianz will look at properties — letting, mixed use, larger villas — that some retail insurers turn away at the quote stage. Terms may be loaded, but a loaded quote is a quote.

Points to check before you sign

1. Earthquake is an optional cover, and in the Algarve it matters. Fenómenos sísmicos is never included by default in Portugal, and Allianz is no exception. It has to be requested, it adds roughly 15–30% to the premium in the Algarve, and — the part owners miss — the excess is expressed as a percentage of the sum insured, not of the loss. A 5% excess on a €500,000 building is €25,000 before the insurer pays anything. Decide deliberately rather than by omission; our article on earthquake cover in the Algarve works through the numbers.

2. The security requirements attached to theft cover. Higher contents sums insured come with conditions — specified lock types, security doors or shutters, sometimes a monitored alarm with a maintenance contract. These sit in the condições particulares as conditions precedent, meaning that if they are not in place at the time of a burglary, the theft cover can be reduced or declined outright. Read them when the policy is issued, not after.

3. The declaration of how the property is used. Allianz rates permanent residence, second home and letting differently, and the rating is only as good as the declaration. A property described as a permanent home and let out for eight weeks a summer is rated wrongly and exposed on precisely the claims letting creates. Changing the declaration mid-term is straightforward and usually cheap. Not changing it is the expensive option.

How Allianz compares

Against Zurich the choice is genuinely close on a mainstream property: Zurich for wording clarity and second-home occupancy, Allianz for optional-cover breadth, assistance and multi-policy consolidation. Against Hiscox, Allianz is the retail generalist against a high-value specialist. Against Liberty Mutual, Allianz covers the standard risks and Liberty the ones outside standard appetite. The four are compared line by line in our 2026 comparison.

Getting an Allianz quote

Send us the property details and we will quote Allianz alongside the other three. Because the Allianz proposition depends so heavily on which optional modules are attached, we will also tell you which ones are worth paying for on your particular property and which are padding — that is usually a bigger swing in value than the difference in headline premium.
