A clean Canadian driving record feels like it should count for something when insuring a car in Portugal. Whether it does, and how much, depends on what a Portuguese insurer will accept as evidence — not on how good the record is, and not on which province issued it.
What Portuguese insurers price on
Portuguese motor insurers typically look at the driver's age, how long the licence has been held, the vehicle, how and where it will be used, and claims history. Claims history within Portugal, and generally within the EU/EEA, tends to move between insurers through recognised no-claims documentation. Canada sits outside that system entirely — there is no EU-style mutual-recognition mechanism that converts a Canadian record into a Portuguese no-claims tier automatically, regardless of which province issued the licence or how many claim-free years it represents.
What can still help
- A letter of experience from your Canadian insurer. Many Canadian auto insurers will issue a letter confirming your policy history and claims record on request. Ask for it before you cancel the policy — it is far easier to obtain while the policy is still active than afterward.
- Proof of how long you have held a licence. Licence tenure is straightforward to document and is one of the factors Portuguese insurers do weigh, separately from claims history.
Insuring a car in Portugal with a Canadian record?
Tell us how long you have held a licence and whether you can get a letter of experience from your Canadian insurer. We will tell you honestly what it is likely to count for.
What this means in practice
Request the letter of experience before you cancel your Canadian policy, and keep your licence details to hand. Go in expecting a Portuguese insurer's starting point to be closer to "new driver in this market" than "driver with a proven Canadian record" — and treat any acceptance of the Canadian history as a genuine plus, not the default.
