What the policy covers, and what it leaves to other policies

Hiscox Colecciones is written for singular collections of different kinds: paintings and works on paper, sculpture, antiques and furniture, books, silver and other objects collected over years.

  • Jewellery and watchesNot part of this policy. In Spain Hiscox writes a separate all-risks policy for jewellery and watches — see art, jewellery and watch insurance.
  • Collections on sale or on showCollections in a risk situation intended for sale or for exhibition fall outside this policy. Works lent to a temporary cultural exhibition are insured under a dedicated policy — see exhibition insurance in Spain.

Why a collection needs its own policy

A household policy treats a collection as contents, usually with a limit per object and a value that is argued after the loss. A collection policy starts from the opposite end: an inventory, values agreed with you and conditions written for objects that cannot simply be replaced.

We start with the list. The more precise the inventory — artist or maker, date, dimensions, provenance, photographs and any recent valuation — the clearer the proposal.

Where the collection is kept

An insurer looks closely at where the pieces live: the address in Spain, the alarm and how it is monitored, safes and display conditions, and whether pieces travel between homes. If part of the collection is in Portugal, tell us — Hiscox and Chubb write both countries.

Frequently asked questions

Which collections can Hiscox Colecciones insure?

Singular collections of different kinds — art, antiques, objects — except jewellery and watches, and except collections in a risk situation intended for sale or exhibition.

Are jewellery and watches included?

No. Jewellery and watches are insured under a separate Hiscox all-risks policy in Spain for clients habitually resident there.

What if I lend works to an exhibition?

Works going to a temporary cultural exhibition are insured under a dedicated nail-to-nail exhibition policy, usually arranged by the organiser. Tell us and we will check that there is no gap between the two.

I deal in art. Is this for me?

No. Collections intended for sale, and works at fairs or auctions, are outside this policy. It is written for private collectors.

How long does a quote take?

We reply within 24 working hours. The full proposal depends on the inventory; the sooner we have it, the sooner the terms.
