A retreat is not one risk, it is several, running at the same time under one event. Organising one in Portugal — hosting, teaching and often housing participants together — means each of those risks needs its own answer, not a single generic policy assumed to cover all of them.

Your own professional liability as an instructor

If you teach on the retreat — yoga, Pilates, meditation, another wellness discipline — your professional liability as an instructor applies exactly as it would to a regular class, and needs to be in place regardless of the retreat format. See our guides to yoga instructor liability and Pilates and Tai Chi instructor liability for what that cover should include.

The Alojamento Local overlap

If the retreat includes accommodation you provide directly — a venue you own or rent out to house participants — and guests are paying for the stay, that activity likely falls under Alojamento Local registration and its own compulsory insurance: multi-risk cover including fire and civil liability for guests and third parties, tied to the RNAL registration and continuing for as long as the registration is active. A residential or standard liability policy does not extend to this commercial activity automatically. See our full Alojamento Local insurance guide for the detail — it applies here even though the "guests" are retreat participants rather than conventional short-term tenants.

Participant accident cover

Separate again from your professional liability and from the property cover: what happens if a participant is injured during a physical activity — a fall during a hike, an injury during a challenging posture, an accident using shared facilities like a pool. Personal accident cover for participants, and confirming what your own liability policy does and does not respond to in that scenario, are both worth establishing before the retreat runs, not after an incident.

Cancellation exposure

A retreat is typically booked, paid for and staffed well in advance, which means the organiser is financially exposed if it has to be cancelled or significantly altered — illness, a venue problem, a weather event, an instructor unable to travel. Whether that exposure is covered, and under what conditions, depends entirely on the specific wording of any cancellation cover arranged; it is not something a standard liability policy typically addresses at all.

[VERIFY] Specific cancellation-insurance products and their terms for retreat-style events are not confirmed against a named Portuguese insurer here — this is flagged as a distinct exposure to plan for, not a specific product being recommended.

Putting the pieces together

A retreat organiser typically needs, as separate pieces rather than one policy: professional liability for the teaching itself, Alojamento Local cover if accommodation is provided directly, participant accident cover for the physical activities involved, and a considered answer on cancellation exposure. Treating any one of these as covering the others is where organisers most often discover a gap — usually after something has already gone wrong.

What we actually do

We map the retreat — who teaches, who hosts, what activities are involved, and the booking and cancellation terms — against these four pieces, and tell you in writing what is covered, what isn't, and what to arrange before the retreat runs.
