International health insurance for expats in Mexico
From San Miguel de Allende and Lake Chapala to Mérida, Puerto Vallarta and Mexico City, Mexico is home to a large international community. An international plan gives you private treatment in Mexico, a way to be treated back home, and a contract that stays with you if you move again.
Who we insure in Mexico
- US retirees and remote workers. Medicare usually doesn’t cover care outside the US, so a plan for Mexico is essential. US citizens are placed with Cigna Global. See health insurance for US citizens abroad.
- Canadians and Europeans. Allianz Care and Cigna Global are both options, and we quote them side by side.
- Families relocated for work. One contract for everyone, with cover that continues if the next posting is elsewhere.
An international plan or a Mexican policy?
Mexican major-medical policies (gastos médicos mayores) are designed for treatment in Mexico and usually combine a deductible with co-insurance on each claim. They can be a sensible choice for someone who will always be treated locally. An international plan costs more, but it covers you in Mexico and in the rest of your area of cover, can include the United States, and does not end if you move country.
The US question
Many expats in Mexico want the option of treatment across the border. You can choose worldwide cover including the USA, the most expensive option, or worldwide excluding it. With Cigna Global, plans that exclude the US still include emergency hospital treatment there up to €75,000 on Silver and €200,000 on Gold, and in full on Platinum. We price both so you can see the difference.
Mexican nationals
International plans are designed for people living outside their country of nationality, so a Mexican citizen living in Mexico is normally not eligible. If you are Mexican and live abroad, see our Spanish guide for Mexicans living abroad.
